About Scope

Scope is a set of free study apps that work with the Canvas or Brightspace course your school already uses. The Scope extension for Chrome searches your courses, Lectra is for reading and marking up PDFs on iPad, and Polya is a tutor that answers from your course materials. To learn more, see What is Scope?.
Yes. The Scope extension, Lectra, Lectra for Mac, Lectra Receiver, and Polya are all free. Polya applies daily fair-use limits so the service stays fair to everyone.
No. Scope is an independent product. It isn’t affiliated with or endorsed by Instructure, which makes Canvas, or D2L, which makes Brightspace. Your school doesn’t need to set anything up for you to use it.
Canvascope is Scope’s former name. The name changed to Scope in July 2026. You may still see the old name in a few places, such as the canvascope.org web address and some store and copyright details.
No. Scope helps you find, read, organize, and understand your course material. It can attach a file to an upload form, but it never submits work for you. Polya teaches through problems instead of handing over answers, unless you choose a study mode that allows full answers. You’re responsible for following your instructor’s rules and your school’s academic-integrity policy.
No. Lectra’s document intelligence uses Apple Intelligence on your device. Ask Scope and Polya use AI models from other companies to write answers. The privacy policies describe how your data is handled. To learn more, see Privacy at a glance.

Your account and privacy

Yes. The Scope extension, Lectra, and Polya share one Scope account. Sign in to each app with the same Google account to use the same Scope account everywhere. To learn more, see Your Scope account.
Not for everything. The Scope extension searches your courses without an account, and Lectra works without one if you choose Sign in later. Polya needs an account because it keeps your courses and conversations for you.
Only in Lectra. The other Scope apps sign in with Google. If you plan to use Lectra with the Scope extension or Polya, sign in to Lectra with Google too.
In Lectra, go to Settings > Account, and under Privacy & Data, tap Delete Account. You can also email support to ask for deletion. Deleting your account deletes it for every Scope app. For all the steps, see Delete your account and data.
No. Scope doesn’t use your notes, documents, or course materials to train AI models. Lectra’s summaries and answers are written on your device, so your documents don’t leave it for those features.
No. There are no ads in any Scope app, and Scope doesn’t track you across other companies’ apps and websites. Scope does count how many people use its apps, without recording what you search for, read, or write. To learn more, see Privacy at a glance.
No. Scope never needs your password or your school’s sign-in details, and it will never ask for them. Don’t send them to anyone who claims to be from Scope.

Scope extension

Canvas and Brightspace. Search works on both. Some features, such as Ask Scope, work only on Canvas. To learn more, see Scope extension for Chrome.
Google Chrome 116 or later on a computer. Chrome extensions don’t run on phones or tablets. To learn more, see System requirements.
On a Canvas page, press ⌘ K on a Mac or Ctrl K on Windows and ChromeOS. You can also click the Scope icon in the Chrome toolbar. To learn more, see Search your courses.
Scope can only search what it has read. Open your school’s Canvas at least once and let Scope finish reading your courses. To look for new material, click the Scope icon in the Chrome toolbar, open the More actions menu, and choose Refresh sync. If a course still looks out of date, see Troubleshoot the Scope extension.
In your browser, on your computer. The search index and the text Scope reads from your course files stay there unless you turn on Sync course text across devices. To remove it, choose Clear Scope data on this browser in Settings.
Sign in to the extension and to Lectra with the same Google account, and turn on Send to Lectra in the extension’s Settings. Then send PDFs from Chrome; they land in the Scope Inbox in Lectra. To learn how, see Send files to Lectra on your iPad.

Lectra

Lectra is on the App Store as Lectra Notes. It runs on iPad with iPadOS 18 or later and on iPhone with iOS 18 or later. To learn more, see Install Lectra.
No. Lectra doesn’t sync annotated documents between devices. When you’re signed in, it keeps a backup copy of your pages with your markup drawn on them. Your editable handwriting stays on the iPad where you wrote it. To learn more, see Backups.
Yes. Your library is on your iPad, so you can open, read, and mark up documents without an internet connection. Backups and files sent from Scope need a connection.
Any Apple Pencil that works with your iPad. Lectra’s pen is pressure-responsive. On Apple Pencil Pro, you can squeeze to switch tools. To learn more, see Mark up a document.
These features need Apple Intelligence: iPadOS 26 or iOS 26 or later, a device that supports Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence turned on in your device’s Settings. They also stay off in Lectra until you turn them on. On other devices, they aren’t available. To learn more, see Use Apple Intelligence in Lectra.
In Lectra 10.0 or later, yes, for 30 days. In your library, tap More library options (•••), choose Recently Deleted, and restore the document.
Export a document as a PDF with your markup on the pages, or as a .lectra file that keeps everything together. To learn how, see Export and share.
Lectra for Mac is a free download that works alongside Lectra on your iPad. It lets your iPad open and control your Mac, and sends files between them. To learn more, see Lectra for Mac.

Polya

Polya answers from your own course materials: your readings, slides, pages, and lecture transcripts. Each answer has numbered citations that open the page, slide, or lecture moment it came from. You also choose how much help Polya gives in each course. To learn more, see Polya overview.
Select Add a course. You can bring in a Canvas course with the Scope extension or a Canvas access token, or bring in a course from its own website. After that, you can upload your own PDFs to the course. To learn how, see Add a course.
It depends on the study mode you choose for the course: Open, Guided, Practice, or Review. New courses start in Guided, which gives hints and steps before a full solution. You can change the mode at any time. To learn more, see Study modes.
Not yet. Today, you choose the study mode for each course yourself, and Polya shows the active mode in every conversation.
No. Polya only reads the courses you choose. Nothing is ever posted back to Canvas.
Yes. Polya works in the web browser on your phone, tablet, or computer. There’s nothing to install.

Yes. In a course’s Study tab, add your exam and practice exam-style questions written from your course materials. To learn more, see Prepare for an exam.
