Most problems with Scope come down to three things: Scope hasn’t read your courses yet, you aren’t signed in, or a feature is turned off in Settings. Find your problem in the following sections. Before you start, two quick fixes solve a lot:
  • Reload your course tab. After Scope updates, open course tabs can lose touch with it. If a page says Scope was updated — refresh this page to keep using it., reload it.
  • Check that you’re on the latest version. Open Scope and look at Settings > About > Version. Chrome updates extensions on its own.

The search bar or popup

  • The search bar opens only on Canvas and Brightspace pages. On other sites, click the Scope icon in your toolbar.
  • If your school uses its own address, the search bar doesn’t open there. Add your school’s site so Scope finds your courses, then search from the Scope icon.
  • Right after a page loads, click anywhere on the page once, then press the keys again.
  • After you install or update Scope, reload the course tab.
Turn off Open search with / in Settings > Features. ⌘+K and Ctrl+K still work.
Click the puzzle-piece icon to the right of the address bar, then click the pin next to Scope. See Pin Scope to your toolbar.
Scope hasn’t found your courses. Click Open Canvas (or Find My Courses in the search bar), sign in to your school if asked, and stay on a course page until the bottom of the popup shows a number of items. See Connect your courses.
Open a course tab, click the Scope icon, click More actions, and choose Refresh sync. Scope only checks for new material while a course tab is open. Big courses take a few minutes, because Scope reads the text of pages and PDFs after it finds their titles.
  • Open Canvas in a tab, then refresh. Open your course site, then try again.
  • Sign in to Canvas, then refresh. Sign in to your school, then try again.
  • Couldn’t check for new material. Make sure you’re signed in to Canvas. Reload the course tab, check that you’re signed in, and try again.
  • Try fewer or different words. Scope understands abbreviations like hw4 and small typos.
  • If you limited search to one course, clear the course pill above the list (Show all courses).
  • Make sure Scope has found your courses: the bottom-right corner of the popup should show a number of items.
  • If you changed Custom ranking, open Settings > Search & AI > Advanced and click Reset to defaults.
Scope reads PDFs in the background after it finds them, so new files take a little while. For a scanned PDF with no text in it, Scope reads the pages only while you’re away from your computer, so it doesn’t slow you down. Leave Chrome open and come back later.
Clear Scope data on this browser removes your course index. Open your course site and let Scope find your courses again.

Ask Scope and AI features

Ask Scope runs in the search bar on course pages, not in the toolbar popup. The row appears when what you type reads like a question. Add a question mark to the end.
Ask Scope and practice exams need a Scope account. See Sign in to Scope.
You paused the morning briefing, which also pauses Ask Scope. If a Your morning study briefing notification is still in your computer’s notification list, click it and click Resume agent. Otherwise, get help from the Scope team. See Pause or resume the morning briefing.
Scope is busier than usual. Click Try Again in a little while. Search and everything you’ve saved still work.
Wait a moment and ask again. If you asked many questions in a short time, give it a minute.
Scope can only see Canvas pages you’ve opened, unless you connect Canvas with an access token. See Connect Canvas with an access token.

Try again, and finish every step in the Google window. If a tab says Close this tab, then sign in again from Scope., close it and start again from the popup.
Check your internet connection and try again in a moment. If you were already signed in, you still are, and nothing you saved is lost.
Messages like Connect Google in Scope first. mean Scope can’t use your calendar. Sign out of Scope, sign in again, and allow calendar access when Google asks.

Send to Lectra

  • Turn on Send to Lectra in Settings > Features. It’s off by default.
  • Sign in to Scope.
  • Open the PDF on its own. On a Canvas page, the button appears only when Scope is sure there’s a PDF on the page.
  • If you use the Lectra Receiver extension, Scope hides its button on website PDFs so you don’t see two.
  • For PDFs saved on your computer, allow access to file URLs. See Allow PDFs saved on your computer.
Lectra hasn’t been opened on an iPad with your account yet. Open Lectra on your iPad, sign in with the same account you use in Scope, then send again.
  • Open Lectra on your iPad and check Scope Inbox. If you saw Sent. It’ll appear the next time you open Lectra., it arrives when you open Lectra.
  • Make sure Lectra and Scope use the same account.
  • Check the footer of the Scope popup. Lectra not connected means Scope can’t reach Lectra right now. Try again in a moment.
It appears only while Send to Lectra is on and you’re signed in, on Canvas assignments that accept file uploads and in Gradescope’s submission window. If you use the Lectra Receiver extension, Scope hides its own button.
Close Gradescope’s submit window, open it again, then try again.
These appear in More actions only when you’re on a Canvas course’s Files page. Import course to Lectra also needs Send to Lectra on.
Free up space in Lectra on your iPad, then send again.
For every send message and what it means, see If a send doesn’t work.

Reminders, calendar, and Canvas appearance

  • Turn on Deadline reminders in Settings > Features. One-time reminders also need it.
  • Make sure your computer allows notifications from Chrome. On a Mac, check System Settings > Notifications > Google Chrome. On Windows, check Settings > System > Notifications.
  • Reminders appear only while Chrome is running.
Sign out of Scope, sign in again, and allow calendar access when Google asks. Then run Syllabus Autopilot again.
Open Settings > Appearance and set Canvas theme to Canvas Default, or open Canvas tweaks and click Reset Canvas appearance.
Turn on Grade pills on cards under Canvas tweaks. Pills appear only on the Canvas dashboard, and only for courses where Canvas shows you a grade.
