Lectra keeps your documents on your iPad. When you sign in, it also backs up a copy of each document’s pages to your account, with your markup on them. Your handwriting stays editable only on the iPad where you wrote it. This page explains what that means, how to check a document’s backup, and how to get your work back.
Lectra backs up your pages. It doesn’t sync documents between devices. If you open a backed-up document on another iPad, your handwriting is part of the page there, and you can’t edit or erase it.

What’s backed up

Backups happen only when you’re signed in. If you use Lectra without an account, nothing leaves your iPad.

When Lectra backs up

Lectra backs up a document’s pages after the document saves. That happens when you:
  • Tap Back to leave the document.
  • Share, print, or send the document to Scope.
  • Open Lectra or return to it. Lectra checks for documents that changed and backs them up.
Lectra doesn’t back up while you’re writing. If you’re offline, the backup waits and goes through when you’re connected.

Check a document’s backup status

In list view, each document shows its backup status. In grid view, the status appears as a small icon on the thumbnail. With VoiceOver, it’s read as Backup status. When a backup finishes, the library briefly shows Backed up.

If a backup fails

Your document is always saved on your iPad first, so a failed backup doesn’t lose any work. Lectra tries again on its own several times over about half an hour. If it still can’t, the status says Lectra couldn’t back up a copy after several tries. To try again yourself, tap Retry on the document.

Backup storage

Your account has a limited amount of backup storage. To see how much you’ve used and which documents take the most space, go to Settings > Storage. To learn more, see Settings. When your backup storage is full, the library shows Lectra storage is full. Your documents are safe on this iPad. New changes stay on the iPad and back up on their own once there’s room. Tap Manage Storage to open Settings > Storage. To make room, delete documents you no longer need. Deleted documents leave your backup when they’re removed from Recently Deleted.

Open your documents on another iPad

1

Install Lectra

Install Lectra on the other iPad. To learn how, see Install Lectra.
2

Sign in with the same account

On the sign-in screen, choose the same Google or Apple account you used before.
3

Open a document

Your backed-up documents appear in the library, marked Not downloaded. Tap one to download it.
The downloaded document has your markup on its pages, but your earlier handwriting can’t be erased or moved. You can write new notes on top. Documents that weren’t backed up, such as ones larger than 50 MB, don’t appear.
To move a document to another iPad with your handwriting still editable, share it as a Lectra Document and open it on the other iPad. To learn how, see Export and share.

Your iPad’s own backup

Lectra stores your documents in its own space on your iPad. When iPadOS backs up your iPad to iCloud or to a computer, that backup includes your Lectra documents. If you restore your iPad from that backup, your documents come back as they were. Lecture recordings are left out of your iPad’s backup so they don’t fill your iCloud storage.

Sign out

When you sign out, your documents stay on this iPad and backups pause. Sign in again to back up new changes. To learn how, see Install Lectra.

Switch accounts on one iPad

The first account you sign in with takes ownership of the documents already on the iPad. If you later sign in with a different account, Lectra doesn’t delete the earlier account’s documents. It sets them aside, untouched, and tells you once how many it set aside. When the earlier account signs in again, its documents come back. To export or delete documents that were set aside:
1

Open Cloud & Backup

Go to Settings > Cloud & Backup.
2

Find the Set aside card

The Set aside card lists each group of documents with the date they were set aside.
3

Choose what to do

Tap Export to save the documents as Lectra files that keep your handwriting editable. Tap Delete to remove them for good, then tap Delete again to confirm. To keep them, tap Keep.

Recovery snapshots

A recovery snapshot is a copy of every document in your library as a PDF, saved at a moment you choose. It’s an extra safety net, separate from your account backup. You don’t need an account to use it.

Make a snapshot

Go to Settings > Cloud & Backup and tap Backup Now. You see Backup saved to On Device. Snapshots are stored on this iPad.
A snapshot holds each document’s pages with your markup flattened onto them, plus your document titles, folders, and favorites. It doesn’t hold editable handwriting or recordings. Snapshots aren’t included in your iPad’s own backup.

Restore from a snapshot

1

Open Recovery Center

Go to Settings > Cloud & Backup and scroll to Recovery Center. It lists your snapshots, newest first, with the number of documents in each.
2

Restore

Tap Restore Copy to add each document from the snapshot as a new document, with “Restored” after its title. Your current documents don’t change.
The restored pages have your markup on them, but the handwriting can’t be edited. Replace Current replaces the pages of each matching document with the snapshot’s pages instead of adding copies. The handwriting you have on those documents now isn’t removed. Lectra doesn’t ask you to confirm, so use Restore Copy unless you’re sure.

Keep snapshots in iCloud Drive

If you turn on Cloud Sync in Settings > Cloud & Backup, Lectra also copies a PDF of each document to iCloud Drive, and each snapshot is saved to iCloud Drive as well as this iPad. You need to be signed in to iCloud with iCloud Drive turned on. Snapshots saved there appear in Recovery Center with an iCloud Drive label. With Cloud Sync on, Automatic Backup makes a snapshot each time Lectra copies your documents to iCloud Drive, such as when you open Lectra. To learn more, see Settings.
Cloud Sync copies PDFs only. It doesn’t sync your handwriting between devices, and the copies count toward your iCloud storage.

Delete your account and backups

To delete your account and everything backed up to it, go to Settings > Account and tap Delete Account. You can keep the documents on your iPad or delete them too. To learn more, see Delete your account.
