If you’re a UC Berkeley student, Scope adds class research to Berkeley’s Schedule Planner. Hover an instructor, a class, or a meeting time to see ratings, past grades, where the building is, and whether the class clashes with your week. You get the answers on the planner page instead of in a dozen other tabs.
This feature works only on UC Berkeley’s Schedule Planner at berkeley.collegescheduler.com. It doesn’t appear for other schools.

Before you begin

  • Install Scope. See Install the Scope extension.
  • Sign in to Scope with Google. Ratings, comments, grades, and maps appear only after you sign in. See Sign in to Scope.
  • Make sure Schedule Planner insight is on. It’s on by default. To check, open Scope and go to Settings > Features.
If you’re signed out, any card shows Sign in to see this. with a Sign in to Scope button. Click it to sign in without leaving the planner.

Open the Schedule Planner

Open Berkeley’s Schedule Planner the way you normally do, for example from CalCentral. When a page lists classes, Scope marks what you can hover:
  • Instructor names get a solid red underline.
  • The subject, course number, and Day(s) & Location(s) cells get a dotted underline.
  • Each class row gets a star button, Quick look at this class.
  • A small Scope button sits in the bottom-right corner of the page.
To close any card, move the pointer away or press Esc.

See instructor ratings and comments

Hover an instructor’s name. A card opens with their Rate My Professors profile:
  • Overall, Difficulty, and Would retake (as a percentage).
  • A bar showing how the ratings are spread out.
  • The number of ratings and a View on RMP → link to the full profile.
  • Student comments: their Rate My Professors reviews first, then posts and comments from r/berkeley that mention them. Each comment links to where it came from.
Reviews from the class you’re hovering move to the top, because a professor’s rating in a small seminar can be very different from their rating in a large lecture. Some instructors have more than one Rate My Professors profile. Scope shows the best match and notes how many other profiles matched. If it can’t tell which profile is right, it shows each one instead of combining them.
Comments from r/berkeley appear only if Reddit lets your browser search it. If you see Couldn’t reach Reddit., open reddit.com in a tab once, then click Try again on the card.

See past grades for a class

Hover the subject or course number of a class. A card shows the grade history from Berkeleytime:
  • Average grade, A range (the share of students who got an A), and Students (how many were graded).
  • A chart of every grade from A+ to F. Hover a bar to see its exact share.
  • A switch between the listed instructor and Everyone, when Berkeleytime has grades for that instructor.
  • Every semester →, which opens the full history on Berkeleytime.

See where and when a class meets

Hover the Day(s) & Location(s) cell. A card shows:
  • A week grid with the class’s meeting times. If your Google Calendar is connected, it also shows your other planned classes and your own calendar events, and notes Clashes with an event when they overlap.
  • A small campus map with a pin on the building, the building name, and the room.
  • Open in Google Maps →, which opens the building in Google Maps.
  • Add to Google Calendar, which adds the class to your calendar.
The week grid shows the current Monday through Sunday. Online and to-be-announced locations don’t get a map pin.

Add a class to Google Calendar

1

Open the class's meeting card

Hover the Day(s) & Location(s) cell, or click the class’s star button.
2

Add it

Click Add to Google Calendar. The button reads Adding…, then ✓ Added.
Scope adds one repeating weekly event for each meeting pattern to your main Google Calendar. The event is named after the class, such as “Statistics 134”, includes the room, and repeats until about the end of the term. If Scope can’t tell the term, the event repeats for 16 weeks. If you see Connect Google in Scope first., sign in to Scope with Google, then try again.

Get a quick look at one class

Hover or click a class row’s star button, Quick look at this class. A card brings together When & where, Instructor, and Grades for that class, with an Add to Google Calendar button.

Compare everything on the page

Click the Scope button in the bottom-right corner. Under Everything on this page, you can open, in new tabs: Tabs open only when you click an option.

Turn the feature off

Open Scope, go to Settings > Features, and turn off Schedule Planner insight. The underlines, cards, star buttons, and the Scope button disappear from the planner right away. Turn it back on the same way.

What Scope shares to look things up

While the feature is on and you’re signed in, Scope looks up the classes and instructors listed on the planner page as soon as it loads, so the cards are ready when you hover. None of these lookups include your Scope account. Scope keeps the results in your browser for a while so the cards open right away: ratings and comments for up to 7 days, and grades for up to 30 days. Your calendar events are read for the card you’re looking at and aren’t saved. To remove the saved results, use Clear Scope data on this browser in Settings. See Privacy and your data.

Troubleshooting

Make sure Schedule Planner insight is on in Settings > Features, then reload the planner page. After Scope updates, you may see Scope was updated — refresh this page to keep using it. Reload the page.
Couldn’t reach Rate My Professors., Couldn’t reach Reddit., and Couldn’t reach the grade archive. mean that site didn’t answer. Check your connection and click Try again on the card.
No Rate My Professors profile found means Scope couldn’t match the name. Click Search on RMP → to search yourself. Names like “Staff” or “TBA” are never looked up.
Connect Google in Scope to see your week. means Scope can’t read your calendar. Sign out of Scope and sign in again with Google, and allow calendar access when Google asks.
