# Add syllabus deadlines to your calendar

> Have Scope pull the exams, assignments, and due dates out of a Canvas syllabus, then add the ones you pick to your agenda and Google Calendar.

A syllabus lists every exam and assignment for the term, but copying those dates into a calendar by hand takes a while. Scope can read the syllabus for you, list the deadlines it finds, and add the ones you pick to your Scope agenda and your Google Calendar.

## Before you begin

* Sign in to Scope with Google. Reading the syllabus and adding to your calendar both need it. See [Sign in to Scope](/chrome/sign-in).
* Open the syllabus in Canvas. Scope can read a course's **Syllabus** page, a course home page that holds the syllabus, or a syllabus PDF.

## Add deadlines from a syllabus

You can start in two ways: from the offer Scope shows on a syllabus, or from the search bar.

<Tabs>
  <Tab title="From the syllabus offer">
    When you open a page in Canvas that looks like a syllabus, Scope shows a card: **This looks like a syllabus**, **Extract the deadlines and add them to your Google Calendar?**

    Click **Add to Calendar** to start. Click **Not now** if you don't want it. Either way, Scope won't offer again for that course.
  </Tab>

  <Tab title="From the search bar">
    On the syllabus page, press <kbd>⌘</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd>, type `syllabus` or `autopilot`, and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **Syllabus Autopilot**.
  </Tab>
</Tabs>

Then:

<Steps>
  <Step title="Wait while Scope reads the syllabus">
    The **Syllabus Autopilot** window shows three steps: reading the syllabus, **Step 2 of 3: Finding your deadlines...**, and **Step 3 of 3: Compiling schedule list...**. A scanned PDF takes longer.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Review the list">
    Scope shows how many deadlines it found, with **deadlines found — pick the ones to add**. Each deadline has a checkbox, a title, and a date and time. Fix any title or date that's wrong, and clear the checkbox for anything you don't want.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Choose whether to add them to Google Calendar">
    **Sync to my Google Calendar** is selected. Clear it if you want the deadlines on your Scope agenda only.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save">
    Click **Save and Schedule**. A message confirms how many deadlines were added and how many went to Google Calendar.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Each deadline you keep becomes a to-do on your Scope agenda. If you kept **Sync to my Google Calendar** selected, Scope also adds a 30-minute event at the due time to your main Google Calendar.

<Note>
  Scope uses AI to read the syllabus, so it can miss a date or read one wrong. Check the list against the syllabus before you click **Save and Schedule**.
</Note>

## Turn the syllabus offer on or off

The **This looks like a syllabus** card is on by default. To turn it off, open Scope, go to **Settings** > **Features**, and turn off **Syllabus deadlines**. You can still run **Syllabus Autopilot** from the search bar.

## If something goes wrong

If Scope can't finish, the window shows **Autopilot Parsing Failed** and a reason. Click **Close**.

| Reason | What to do |
| - | - |
| **You must be signed in to Scope to use AI parsing.** | Sign in to Scope, then try again. |
| **No syllabus content found. Open a syllabus PDF, or your Canvas Syllabus / course home page, and try again.** | Go to the syllabus itself, then run it again. |
| **Could not parse any text from the PDF syllabus.** | The PDF may be an image with no text. Try the course's **Syllabus** page instead. |
| **No assignments or key deadlines were found in the syllabus.** | The page may not list dates. Try a different syllabus page or file. |
| A message about the AI not responding | Wait a moment and try again. |

If fewer deadlines reached Google Calendar than you expected, sign out of Scope and sign in again, and allow calendar access when Google asks.
