# Keyboard shortcuts

> Every key the Scope extension responds to, in the search bar on course pages and in the toolbar popup.

Scope is built to work from the keyboard. You can open the search bar, move through results, ask a question, and pin an item without touching the mouse.

On a Mac, use <kbd>⌘</kbd> (Command). On Windows, ChromeOS, and Linux, use <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>.

## Open and close the search bar

These keys work on Canvas and Brightspace pages.

| Keys | What they do |
| - | - |
| <kbd>⌘</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> | Open the search bar. |
| <kbd>/</kbd> | Open the search bar. Doesn't work while you're typing in a text field on the page. |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Close the search bar. If an answer is showing, the first <kbd>Esc</kbd> goes back to your results and the second closes the search bar. |
| <kbd>Tab</kbd> | Move between the search box, the links and buttons in an answer, and the follow-up box. Focus stays inside the search bar until you close it. |

<Note>
  If the shortcuts don't respond right after a page loads, click anywhere on the page once and try again. On pages that aren't Canvas or Brightspace, click the Scope icon in your toolbar instead.
</Note>

### Turn off the / shortcut

If <kbd>/</kbd> gets in your way, open the Scope popup, go to **Settings** > **Features**, and turn off **Open search with /**. <kbd>⌘</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> and <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> keep working.

## Move through results

These keys work in the search bar and in the toolbar popup.

| Keys | What they do |
| - | - |
| <kbd>↓</kbd> and <kbd>↑</kbd> | Highlight the next or previous result. |
| <kbd>Enter</kbd> | Open the highlighted result in the current tab. On an **Ask Scope** row, ask the question. On a command row, run the command. |
| <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>Enter</kbd> | Pin or unpin the highlighted result. |
| <kbd>⌘</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd> + click | Open a result in a new background tab. |

## Ask questions and follow up

| Keys | What they do |
| - | - |
| <kbd>Enter</kbd> | In **Ask a follow-up…**, send your follow-up. |
| <kbd>Shift</kbd>+<kbd>Enter</kbd> | In **Ask a follow-up…**, start a new line. |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Leave the answer and go back to your search results. |

## In the toolbar popup

| Keys | What they do |
| - | - |
| <kbd>Esc</kbd> | Close **Settings**, **Help & Shortcuts**, the **More actions** menu, or another open panel. |
| <kbd>Tab</kbd> | Move between the search box, tabs, and buttons. |

To see a short list of shortcuts inside Scope, open the popup and go to **Settings** > **Help & shortcuts**.

## Change the shortcut

Scope's shortcuts are built into its course-page search bar, so you can't change them in Chrome's keyboard shortcut settings. You can only turn off the <kbd>/</kbd> shortcut, as described earlier.
