# Install the Scope extension

> Add Scope to Chrome from the Chrome Web Store, pin it to your toolbar, and understand what Chrome asks you to allow.

Scope is a free extension for Google Chrome. You install it once from the Chrome Web Store, and it works on your school's Canvas or Brightspace site from then on. You don't need an account to install it or to search your courses.

## Before you begin

* A computer with Google Chrome version 116 or later. Chrome extensions don't run on phones or tablets.
* Your school's Canvas or Brightspace sign-in.

<Tip>
  To check your Chrome version, open the Chrome menu and choose **Help** > **About Google Chrome**. Chrome updates itself, so most people already have a recent version.
</Tip>

## Install Scope

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the listing">
    In Chrome, go to the [Scope page on the Chrome Web Store](https://chromewebstore.google.com/detail/scope/bamoelobnoepklagbcokjnlipfhcfdbb).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Add it to Chrome">
    Click **Add to Chrome**. Chrome lists what the extension is allowed to do. To continue, click **Add extension**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the welcome page">
    A new tab opens that says **Scope is ready**. Click **Open Canvas** to go to your school's course site. Scope can't find anything until you open it once.
  </Step>
</Steps>

After you open your course site, Scope starts finding your courses. To learn what happens next, see [Connect your courses](/chrome/connect-your-courses).

<Note>
  Scope used to be called Canvascope. If you installed Canvascope earlier, you already have Scope. It updated on its own and kept your data.
</Note>

## Pin Scope to your toolbar

Chrome hides new extensions behind the puzzle-piece icon. Pinning Scope puts its icon next to the address bar so you can open it in one click.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the extensions menu">
    To the right of the address bar, click the puzzle-piece icon.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pin Scope">
    Next to **Scope**, click the pin icon.
  </Step>
</Steps>

The Scope icon now stays in your toolbar. Click it any time to open the Scope popup.

## What Chrome asks you to allow

When you add Scope, Chrome shows a short list of what the extension can do. The exact wording comes from Chrome. Here is what Scope uses each kind of access for.

| Access | What Scope uses it for |
| - | - |
| Data on the websites you visit | Reading the course pages you open on Canvas and Brightspace, so Scope can find your files, pages, and due dates. If you turn on **Send to Lectra**, Scope also adds a button to PDFs you open on other sites. |
| Your open tabs | Recognizing which tab is a course page. Scope doesn't read your browser history. |
| Notifications | Deadline reminders (off until you turn them on) and the result of a **Send to Lectra** you start from the right-click menu. |
| Downloads | Saving a whole course's PDFs to your computer when you ask, and saving files that come back from Lectra. |

Scope may also ask, at the moment you use a feature, for permission to:

* Sign in with your Google account. See [Sign in to Scope](/chrome/sign-in).
* Group tabs. Scope asks only when you open several results together and they can go into a named tab group.

For the full picture of what stays in your browser and what doesn't, see [Privacy and your data](/chrome/privacy-and-data).

## Keep Scope up to date

Chrome updates extensions on its own, usually within a few days of a new release. You don't need to do anything.

To see which version you have, open Scope, click the **Settings** icon, and look at **Version** under **About**.
