# Grades, notes, and focus tools

> Check your grades, try what-if GPA scenarios, run a focus timer with background sound, and keep quick notes, all from the Scope search bar.

Scope includes a few small tools you open from the search bar on any course page: a GPA calculator, a one-screen grades summary, a focus timer, and quick notes. Each one opens over the page you're on, so you don't lose your place.

To open any tool, press <kbd>⌘</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> or <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>K</kbd> on a Canvas or Brightspace page, type the tool's name, and press <kbd>Enter</kbd>. To see every tool and command, type `/`. To close a tool, click **✕** in its corner.

## See your grades on one screen

Type `grades` and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **Grades summary**. The **Grades** window lists each course with your current letter grade and percentage, taken from Canvas.

If you see **No grade data yet. Open a course's grades page once and reopen.**, open the **Grades** page of one of your Canvas courses, then open the summary again.

<Note>
  Grades come from Canvas only. Brightspace grades don't appear here.
</Note>

You can also ask Scope about your grades, such as "what do I need on the final to keep an A in Bio 1A?". See [Ask Scope](/chrome/ask-scope).

## Calculate your GPA

The GPA calculator starts with your current Canvas courses and grades, so you can see your GPA and try what-if changes.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the calculator">
    Type `gpa` and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **GPA calculator**. The **GPA Calculator** window opens with a scenario named **Live (Current Term)**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick your scale">
    In **Scale**, choose **College (4.0)**, **High School (4.0 Unweighted)**, **High School (4.3)**, or **High School (5.0 Weighted)**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Adjust courses">
    Edit any row. Your GPA and total units update as you type.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Save the scenario">
    In **Scenario**, give it a name, such as "If I get a B in chem". Click **Save scenario**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

Each row has these columns:

| Column | What to enter |
| - | - |
| **Course** | The course name. |
| **Letter** | The letter grade, such as `A-`. If you leave it empty, Scope uses the percentage. |
| **%** | The percentage grade. |
| **Credits** | How many units the course is worth. |
| **Weight** | Extra points for a weighted class, used only on the **High School (5.0 Weighted)** scale. For example, enter `0.5` for honors or `1` for AP, if that's how your school weights them. |
| **Excl.** | Select it to leave the course out of your GPA. |

To add a course, click **+ Add course**. To remove one, click **✕** at the end of its row. To open a scenario you saved, choose it from **Load…**, or type `gpa` followed by its name in the search bar.

<Note>
  The calculator uses a standard letter-to-point table. If your school calculates GPA differently, your official GPA can differ.
</Note>

## Run a focus timer

Type `timer`, `focus`, or `pomodoro` and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **Focus timer**. Focus Mode opens with a timer and your next tasks.

* **Current Goal**: choose what you're working on from **Select active task…**, or pick **+ Type custom task…** to type your own.
* **Up Next**: your upcoming work from your agenda.
* The timer: choose **25m Work** or **45m Deep** for a work session, or **5m break** or **15m break**. Use **Play**, **Pause**, and **Reset**. The timer shows **WORK SESSION** or **REST BREAK**.
* **Focus Soundscape**: play **Brown Noise** or **Binaural Beats** in the background, or choose **None**. Adjust **Volume** with the slider.

When a session ends, Scope tells you **Session completed! Take a break.** When a break ends, it says **Break over! Let's focus.** To leave, click **✕ Exit Focus Mode**.

## Keep notes

You can save short notes while you study and find them later in search.

* **Save a quick note**: type `note` followed by your note, such as `note ask about problem 3 in office hours`, and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **Quick note**. The search bar closes and the note is saved.
* **See all your notes**: type `notes` and press <kbd>Enter</kbd> on **Browse notes**. The **Notes** window lists every note, newest first.
* **Add a note in the Notes window**: type in the box at the top and click **Add note**. You can use `**bold**`, `*italic*`, `- ` for a list item, and `- [ ] ` for a checkbox.
* **Delete a note**: in the **Notes** window, click **✕** on the note.

Study plans that Ask Scope saves for you also appear in your notes.

## Add to-dos and reminders

To add your own to-dos to your agenda, or set a one-time reminder, see [Add your own to-dos](/chrome/due-dates#add-your-own-to-dos) and [Set a one-time reminder](/chrome/due-dates#set-a-one-time-reminder).

## Where your notes and scenarios are saved

Notes, to-dos, and saved GPA scenarios are saved in this browser. If you're signed in to Scope, a copy is also kept with your account. **Clear Scope data on this browser** doesn't delete them. For details, see [Privacy and your data](/chrome/privacy-and-data).
