# Change how Canvas looks

> Pick a Canvas theme, adjust dashboard card spacing, show your grades on course cards, preview assignments on hover, and hide parts of Canvas you don't use.

Scope can restyle Canvas in your browser. You can switch to a warmer theme, tighten or loosen the dashboard cards, see your current grade on each course card, and peek at an assignment without opening it. These changes affect only what you see. Your instructors and classmates see Canvas as usual.

All of these options are in the Scope popup under **Settings** > **Appearance**. Changes apply to your open Canvas tabs right away, so you can watch them as you choose.

<Note>
  Canvas appearance works on Canvas only. Brightspace pages stay as they are.
</Note>

## Choose a theme for Scope itself

**Theme** sets the colors of the Scope popup and the search bar that opens on course pages. It doesn't change Canvas.

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Settings">
    Click the Scope icon, then click the **Settings** icon (the gear).
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick light or dark">
    Under **Appearance**, next to **Theme**, click **Light** or **Dark**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## Choose a Canvas theme

**Canvas theme** changes the colors of Canvas pages.

| Canvas theme | What it looks like |
| - | - |
| **Canvas Default** | Canvas exactly as your school set it up. |
| **Paper** | Warm, cream-colored pages with copper accents, easier on the eyes for long reading. |

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open Appearance">
    In the Scope popup, go to **Settings** > **Appearance**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Pick a theme">
    Open the **Canvas theme** menu and choose a theme.
  </Step>
</Steps>

With **Paper** on, Scope also matches the toolbar around PDFs in Canvas's document viewer and the background of course video galleries. The PDF pages and the video player themselves don't change.

## Change dashboard card spacing

**Card density** sets how much space the course cards on your Canvas dashboard take up.

| Option | Effect |
| - | - |
| **Canvas default** | Canvas's usual spacing. |
| **Compact** | Smaller cards, so more courses fit on screen. |
| **Cozy** | A little more room than Compact. |
| **Comfy** | The most room around each card. |

## Canvas tweaks

Under **Settings** > **Appearance**, open **Canvas tweaks** to find these switches. They're all off until you turn them on.

| Switch | What it does |
| - | - |
| **Grade pills on cards** | Shows your current letter grade and percentage, such as "A 94.2%", on each course card on your Canvas dashboard. Grades refresh about every 30 minutes while Canvas is open. |
| **Hover previews** | When you hover a link to an assignment, quiz, or announcement, shows a small preview with its title, due date, and description. |
| **Hide recent feedback** | Hides the **Recent Feedback** list on your Canvas dashboard. |
| **Hide Help link** | Hides Canvas's **Help** item in the left navigation. |

<Note>
  Grade pills show only the grades Canvas shows you. If a course hides grades, its card has no pill.
</Note>

## Reset Canvas appearance

To put Canvas back the way it was, go to **Settings** > **Appearance** > **Canvas tweaks** and click **Reset Canvas appearance**. Scope asks you to confirm, because this can't be undone. It clears your theme, card colors, and font choices.

Turning everything back to **Canvas Default** and turning off each tweak has the same effect, one setting at a time.
